Why Our End-of-Life Doula Program?

We fully explore all the ways to be the best end of life advocate, loving companion, and compassionate witness—assisting in ways the dying and their families may be too exhausted to do on their own. Those of you who are not interested in a professional service will still receive the benefit of learning the key aspects and components of a practice, and confidence in knowing you really do know all the practical aspects of accompanying the dying well. You will learn how to care for yourself deeply over your lifetime as you advocate for and serve your families, as well as companion and love them during dying and beyond.

Our program is not meant to tell you what "means something" to a person who is dying, that is for them to tell you. It is not our place to assume we can teach you exactly how to care for every culture and belief background, but Deanna does teach you everything she knows from working in the trenches for over 20 years—the practical aspects—so that you can bring this expertise to your own communities. You know what’s meaningful to your own spiritual circles. To your own culture and community. We work with leaders from every race, orientation, religion, and spiritual practice.

What We Face

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that "between 2020 and 2050, the number of deaths is projected to rise substantially as the population ages and a significant share of the population, the baby boomers, age into older adulthood." The enormous pressure this places on present health and death care systems requires innovative solutions to help. Additionally, in 2020, we are experiencing unprecedented times with a global pandemic that is requiring more grief support. We are also in a new level of awareness and activism for racial justice that is bringing a huge need for advocacy and support at the end of life for those who have been poorly served over their entire lifetime in the healthcare system.

The Solution

YOU are the solution. The role of the End-of-Life Doula is the solution because it is the non-medical role of the EOL doula that will be able to advocate for our family, friends, and neighbors—bridging services and support within and between present healthcare entities. In our CareDoula® program, you will be thoroughly trained to be in deep presence with a person who is dying and their family. You will be aware of what is most important in being a witness and a healing presence so that you may be a healing force during this pandemic, and the grief brought on by the pain of racial injustice in health and death care. Our role is outside of the mainstream healthcare system, so we may be able to build trust where none was had before. We have our work cut out for us. We have much to offer our world in these unprecedented times.

What our students are saying...

Tiffany R.

"Working with you has helped me to align myself with that feels right to me in this work. You confirmed in me what my passions and gifts are. Getting validation from someone with your knowledge and experience in this field has changed me forever. I truly mean that. I didn’t know being a “Death Doula” was even a thing. I now know 100% what my purpose is. Thank you for all of your time and the energy you put into this program. You are changing lives."

Cynthia B.

"I cannot thank you enough...Coming into the program I was very clear on what I believed my direction with End of Life work was. However, very shortly into the program with your guidance, intuition and foresight I was able to clarify and focus my true hearts calling. This program not only gave me the opportunity to communicate and connect with others of like mind, but to expand on the tools needed to clarify my calling."

June F.

"You are 'real', down to earth and enlightened; I am drawn to those qualities and I know these are ultimately a great part of your success in this field! I strive to create change in this emerging 'grassroots' area of life and death. Death is just as much a part of life as is birth. I am humbled to be in your 'arena' Deanna, Thank you."

Sara W.

"I have learned that despite my inner fears and insecurities, I am innately ready to support the dying and their loved ones. I have felt the ability and strength to do this work most of my adult life but now, after taking this beautifully designed course, I know I was made to do it. It’s like all of my experiences, struggles, abilities, strengths, lessons, interests, so many facets of me point directly to me doing this work. I’ve had the tools the whole time, but your experience and direction has offered a structure to put all the technical details in order. I’ve mentioned before that I am not a technical person so this course has helped me tremendously. I feel I have a foundation to build upon now rather than standing in a murky pond knowing what I need lies beneath the surface but not able to see it. It’s so much clearer now. It gives me great comfort knowing I have the section material and my responses at my finger tips for reference to easily and often refresh myself."
